Module 1: Transformations

Note 1: Assignment Booklet 1A; page 8, question 14.

  • Stretching about the line x = 4 is the unique part of this question. A similar question can be found: Example 2
    • In most of this course you would be completing a horizontal stretch about the line x = 0 (the y-axis). What you need to do in this question is:
      1. move the graph 4 units to the left so the center of the graph shifts from x = 4 to x = 0 (the y-axis). The horizontal translation component of the standard form of the equation is (x - h), h is the horizontal translation. Replace x with (x - h). Note the critical piece is toknow whether a shift 4 units to the left is (x - 4) or (x + 4). Example 2 should help.
      2. stretch the graph horizontally by a factor of 2. If the horizontal stretch factor is 2, what do you replace x with? Example 2 should help.
      3. return the graph to the original position by moving the graph 4 units right. Note the critical piece is toknow whether a shift 4 units to the rigth is (x - 4) or (x + 4). Example 2 should help.
