How To Use

You will need a calculator.  You will find it more convenient to have a desktop model.  Scientific calculators are available for under $20.   This online scientific calculator is a good example of the features needed:

Careful if you have limited internet time.  It could be an expensive free choice.

The Argyll computers have a calulator that is not a scientific calculator, but is a handy mathematics tool:

Introduction

The Introduction component opens the lesson with a problem-oriented career, real world, consumer, inter-disciplinary or game context.

The Introduction often allows the student to see an alternative way to explore the concept dealt with in the lesson.

Tutorial

The CGL Tutorial component has the instruction that directly supports the Specific Outcome of the Lesson. This section is brief and straight-forward with simple
examples to build student understanding. The Tutorial may present alternative approaches or solutions to help students understand the objective.

Students can double click on the term highlighted in blue to access the on-screen Glossary.

Most of your notes and vocabulary for the Lotus Notes activity will come from this section.

Examples

Examples extend learning with skills that  may require fractions, decimals, calculations with awkward numbers or application problems.

Examples are highly interactive and may also include diagnostic feedback, hints or alternative solutions.

6-12 Examples may be presented. A Hidden Screen is progressively revealed as students complete each
example.

Summary

Summary revisits the Introduction and shows how the mathematics in the Tutorial and the Examples might apply to the problem in the
Introduction.

The Summary may also extend or enrich the material presented.

Practice
and
Problems

Practice and Problems present questions
related to the lesson content and pedagogy. A jeopardy board organizes the questions and pedagogical approaches from simple to complex.

Correctly completed questions uncover part of a puzzle, picture, career-related graphic, open-ended thematic problem or another type of motivational hidden feature.

Extra
Practice

Extra Practice mirrors the types of questions students encounter in the Self Check. After
each question, students have the option to retry
incorrectly answered questions, see the correct answer or a sample solution.

Questions for each type of exercise are randomly
selected from a data bank of 60 or more questions.  You may choose to complete the questions in the Student Refresher instead of this section.

Self Check

Self Check presents a maximum of 10 questions of graduated difficulty that reflect the lesson objective. You will be completing the Self Check three times and recording the score in the related Lotus Notes activity.

Students can access their score and then review the questions and their answers a question at-a-time, try again, see the correct answer or a sample solution.

On achieving a minimum standard (usually 70%), the lesson is considered to be completed and the student's score is recorded on their individual file.
