Learning Outcomes:

The student will:

recognize and illustrate that all fractions and mixed numbers can be represented in decimal form (including terminating and repeating decimals).

Methods for Converting Fractions to Decimals

Convert fraction to an equivalent fraction with a denominator that is a power of ten before converting to a decimal.

1/2 = 5/10 = 0.5

3/20 = 15/100 = 0.15

1/8 = 125/1000 = 0.125

When proper/improper fractions have different numerators and denominators, the decimal equivalent of each can be calculated by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

3/4 = 0.75

3/8 = 0.375

4/15 = 0.0666...

Complete the numerator divided by the denominator calculation with a calculator.

2/5 = 2 5 =

2/3 = 2 3 =

14/15 = 14 15 =

336/445 = 336 445 =

4 7/12 = 55/12 = 55 12 =

terminating decimal	1/2 = 0.5	7/100 = 0.07
repeating decimal	1/3 = = 0.333...	3/11 = =0.272727...
