12.05 Subtracting Integers

The student will:

subtract integers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically.
Drag the appropiate number of tiles to each side of the - sign to model the question. When your model matches the question, move all of the tiles to the left of the - sign. Notice what happens to the tiles as they move across the - sign. If you have yellow and red tiles, try placing a red tile on top of the yellow tile to show a zero pair. Repeat with all of the zero pairs to see the integer sum modelled by each set of tiles.

	-4 - -3 = -1
	-7 - -6 = -1
	-3 - -4 = 1
	-6 - -7 = 1

	3 - -4 = 7
	5 - -6 = 11
	-4 - 3 = -7
	-7 - 6 = -13
	-3 - 4 = -7
	-6 - 7 = -11
