Understanding Algebra Tiles

Let's start out by looking at the algebra tiles we need to understand for solving simple equations.

tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) stands for the number 1

tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) stands for subtract 1

tile_pos_x.gif (896 bytes) stands for a number

tile_neg_x.gif (959 bytes) stands for subtract a number

tile_pos_halfx.gif (973 bytes) half of a number  tile_pos_thirdx.gif (1004 bytes) third of a number  tile_pos_quarterx.gif (958 bytes) quarter of a number  tile_pos_fifthx.gif (980 bytes) fifth of a number

Combining Algebra Tiles

Now let's see how we can combine algebra tiles.

tile_pos_x.gif (896 bytes) tile_neg_x.gif (959 bytes) Start with a number then subtract that number and you will end up with zero.

tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) Start with 1 then subtract 1 and you will end up with zero.

tile_pos_x.gif (896 bytes) tile_pos_x.gif (896 bytes) tile_pos_x.gif (896 bytes) = 3x

tile_neg_x.gif (959 bytes) tile_neg_x.gif (959 bytes) tile_neg_x.gif (959 bytes) tile_neg_x.gif (959 bytes) = -4x

tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_pos_1.gif (852 bytes) = 5

tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) tile_neg_1.gif (852 bytes) = -6
