The student will:
Algebra TilesAlgebra tiles have a variety of other names: algetiles, math tiles, and virtual tiles. Algebra tiles can help you visualize equivalent algebraic expressions and/or equations. Many of the real tiles have a positive and a negative side. The virtual algebra tiles activities will use multi-coloured positive tiles. The reverse (negative) side of each of these tiles is red. It helps to understand that negative tiles have one positive and one negative dimension. Some algebra kits use black
tiles for positive areas and red for the flip (negative) sides.

Equivalent ExpressionsAlgebra tiles can help you visualize equivalent algebraic expressions and/or equations. Some kits use different colors for the various positive tiles. Let's look at examples where we have groups of x tiles. This activity will create the question, show the intermediate step, and provide the answer to the expression. Learning the pattern(s) here will help you to solve the expressions independently. If you have algebra tiles, build the expression generated. Make the appropriate changes in the tiles as you work through each of the steps in the solution.

Distributive Property: a(b + c) = ab + ac

Divide (4x-6) into two groups |
and you will get 2x-3 in each group |
(4x-6) / 2 = 2x - 3 Distributive Property: (ab + ac)/a = b + c (4x-6) is the total. You MUST divide both parts of the group by 2 to find what is in each group. |
