I recommend the Tiles Equation Video (9 minutes) first. Next study the Examples provided to see the strategies used to solve linear equations 1, 2 and 3.  The Algebra Tiles Practice activity will create the question, show the intermediate step(s), provide the answer to the equation and show how to verify the answer. If you need a review of the linear equations taught in grade 7 and 8, go to the next section.

If you have algebra tiles, build the equation generated in the Algebra Tiles Practice with your tiles.  Use the virtual tiles provided if you do not.  Make the appropriate changes in the tiles as you work through each of the steps in the solution. Learning the pattern(s) here will help you  to solve the equations without tiles
